Morocco travel FAQ: your questions answered

Safety, plugs, time difference, alcohol, tap water, drones, travelling solo or with kids: our local guides answer the most common questions about Morocco.

Before a first trip to Morocco, the same questions often come up. We have gathered here the questions our travellers ask most often, with short, practical answers from our local guides. For paperwork, money and transport, also see our 15 practical tips before you go.

Before you go

Is Morocco safe for tourists?

Yes. Morocco is one of the safest destinations in Africa and welcomes millions of visitors every year. As anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings in crowds, avoid deserted alleys late at night and politely decline fake guides.

How many days do you need in Morocco?

Allow 7 to 10 days for a full loop of the imperial cities, the Atlas and the desert, like our 10-day grand tour of Morocco. With 4 or 5 days, focus on one region, for example Marrakech and Essaouira or Marrakech and the desert.

What is the best time to go?

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) have the best weather everywhere. Winter is ideal for the desert, summer for the Atlantic coast. All the details in the best time to visit Morocco.

Do I need vaccinations for Morocco?

No vaccinations are mandatory for travellers from Europe or North America. It is advisable to be up to date with routine vaccines; ask your doctor before you travel.

Once you are there

What time zone is Morocco in?

Morocco uses GMT+1 all year round, except during the month of Ramadan when the country switches back to GMT.

What plugs are used in Morocco?

Sockets are type C and E, as in most of continental Europe, at 220 V. Travellers from the UK or North America need an adapter.

Can you drink the tap water?

Tap water is treated in the cities, but we recommend drinking bottled water, especially during the first days, to avoid minor stomach upsets. It is sold everywhere and is cheap.

Can you drink alcohol in Morocco?

Yes, discreetly. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars and sold in some supermarkets. It is hardly available in the medinas, and you should not drink in the street.

Can I bring a drone?

No, not without prior authorisation. Importing drones is forbidden without a permit and they are usually confiscated at customs. Leave yours at home.

What should I wear in Morocco?

There is no strict rule, but clothes covering shoulders and knees are appreciated in medinas, villages and religious places. On the coast and in hotels, dress is more relaxed. Bring a jumper for the evenings, which are cool for much of the year.

Can I photograph people?

Always ask before photographing someone, especially women and children. Also avoid photographing official buildings, police officers and soldiers.

Can a woman travel alone in Morocco?

Yes, many women travel around Morocco on their own. Modest clothing limits unwanted comments, which are best simply ignored. Travelling with a private driver-guide is a comfortable way to discover the country with peace of mind.

Is Morocco good for children?

Yes, Moroccans love children and welcome them warmly everywhere. Camels, quad bikes, the desert and the gardens are big hits with families. You just need to adapt driving times: we are happy to shorten the stages.

Is Morocco good for vegetarians?

Yes: vegetable tagines and couscous, Moroccan salads, harira, msemen… You can eat very well without meat. To discover local food, read the 10 Moroccan dishes to try.
