Grilled fish at Essaouira harbour

Pick your fish at the stall and it is grilled in front of you: sardines, sea bream, squid and prawns facing the Atlantic.

In Essaouira, the best lunch is at the harbour. The blue boats come back in the morning, the fish is sold on the stalls and the small grills lined up near the sea gate cook it to order.

It is simple: you choose your fish, it is weighed, the price is agreed, then it is brought to you grilled with salad and bread, surrounded by seagulls. Sardines, sea bream, red mullet, squid, prawns or spider crab depending on the day’s catch.

Our tip: come around noon, check the price per kilo before it goes on the grill and finish with a walk along the Skala ramparts.

On the menu

  • Sardines, sea bream or sole grilled over wood
  • Squid and prawns a la plancha
  • Moroccan tomato and onion salad
  • Bread and lemon
