About three hours from Marrakech, Essaouira shows a completely different side of Morocco: a white and blue fortified town cooled by the trade winds, where people come to breathe the ocean air. Formerly known as Mogador, it charms visitors with its lively port, its UNESCO-listed medina and its artistic atmosphere. Here is what to do in Essaouira to make the most of the “pearl of the Atlantic”.
A bit of history
Known to the Phoenicians and later to the Portuguese as Mogador, the present town was built from 1760 by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, who entrusted its plans to the French architect Théodore Cornut. This blend of European town planning and Moroccan architecture, with straight streets and ramparts, is why the medina was listed by UNESCO in 2001.
The Skala ramparts
The Skala de la Ville is Essaouira’s most famous walk: a long bastion lined with bronze cannons overlooking the ocean. It has been used as a setting for several films and series, including Game of Thrones. Right next to it, beneath the walls, workshops craft thuya wood marquetry, the local speciality.

The fishing port and its blue boats
Early in the morning, the port comes alive as the blue boats return and the fish auction begins. Climb the Skala du Port for the view over the boats and the Purpuraires islands, then have grilled fish at the stalls: our favourite is grilled fish at Essaouira harbour.

Wandering the medina
More spacious than those of Marrakech or Fez, Essaouira’s medina is easy to explore without a guide. Don’t miss the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, the art galleries, the spice souks and Place Moulay Hassan, where you can have a coffee facing the sea.
Beach, kitesurfing and horse riding
The long beach south of town is perfect for walks. Thanks to the steady wind, Essaouira is one of Morocco’s best kitesurfing and windsurfing spots. You can also ride a horse or a camel to the Diabat dunes.
The Gnawa festival
Every June, the Gnaoua World Music Festival turns the town into a huge stage where Gnawa masters play with artists from around the world. Book early if you are travelling at that time.
On the road from Marrakech
The road from Marrakech crosses the land of the argan tree, which grows only in south-western Morocco. Stop at a women’s cooperative to see how argan oil is made, and keep your eyes open: you may spot goats perched in the trees.
